All hands on deck – audio

Use this resource with the Raleigh, writer, rover or rogue? lesson from our Sea topic.

This issue’s radio play All hands on deck, finds time traveller Amadeus Jones taking a trip to the 16th century where he meets Sir Walter Raleigh. Before you listen to the play, ask the children what they know about Raleigh and write up all their contributions on the whiteboard – it doesn’t matter if they’re not correct or seem trivial. Encouraging the children to listen carefully for clues about Raleigh’s life. After listening, ask the children what they learned about Raleigh from the play. Can they add to the information on the whiteboard or maybe even edit it?

Raleigh had many job titles – a sailor, soldier, explorer, privateer or pirate, politician, aristocrat, courtier, writer, poet and spy!
