Use this resource with the Pirate problems lesson from our Books topic.
Measure the distance between the islands and round up or down the distances.
To extend the activity, ask the children to work out the total distance the pirates would travel if they visited all the islands. Can they find a shorter route and draw it on the map? How much shorter would the route be? Look at the scale. What if the scale were 1cm = 2km – what would the approximate distances between the islands be then? Try out other scales, such as 1cm = 500m.
Challenge the children to devise maths problems based on the diagram. For example: ‘If the pirates were travelling at six kilometres per hour, how long would it take them to sail from island A to island B?’
